Case Description
My relative is a lung transplant candidate and is currently high on the list in California, meaning he could get called for transplant any second. He is seeking to have some work done on his neglected teeth and gums, however there are some risks he is worried about. He wants to get the work done before the transplant and immunosuppressive drugs, since having bad teeth and bad gums could be a liability post transplant. The major concern is to reduce chances of infection post transplant. He is also currently on 6 liters of oxygen per minute and cannot do without the O2 else he will get hypoxic. Are there dentists in the SF Bay Area that feel comfortable dealing with such a patient? Any recommendations?

When selecting a new doctor, consider the following:
  • Quality of Explanations: Compare dentist replies. Give preference to well-reasoned, detail-oriented, transparent explanations.
  • Experience & Qualifications: If a dentist has a practice listing, check their practice description, special training, typical office procedures and before & after case photographs.
  • Other Patients' Freedback: If a dentist has reviews, read other patients' reviews. The more reviews they have, the more likely it is that other patients' feeback is accurate.
  • Treatment Costs: Dental procedure costs vary from practice to practice and depend on a variety of factors. Because quality of patient care and treatment results vary from practice to practice most dentists will not "price-match" treatment fees of others.

I totally agree with his concerns.

My advice is to contact the Oral Medicine Clinical Center at the UCSF Department of Orofacial Sciences.

Although they deal with dental services related to patients who have had or will get radiation treatment, they should also know what needs to be done for patients who are planning to receive immunosuppressive therapy.

I hope this helps.

I recieved your email regarding the health conditions of your relative and the needed dental care prior to any upcoming surgery. We see patients with many different health conditions and feel confident in providing quality dental care in a comfortable environment. Upon reviewing the information you have provided, I would recommend having your relative come into our office for a full comprehensive examination and x-rays. Once we have this information, we can determine the best treatment plan for this person. I would like to have one of our anesthesiologists on site while we provide any dental care to assist in continuously monitoring the health and safety of the patient. This will provide the safest environment without having to seek hospital dental care for your relative.

Please call our office if you would like to schedule an appointment at 925-939-4989.

Sincerely,

Dr. Scott Pope
